ENG 416 Professional Writing: Crisis Writing

Crisis Response is a topic of both academic and professional study. Major corporations, politicians, and individuals often seek out the most effective ways to respond to a crisis, not just in handling the issue but also in how the crisis/response is presented to the public. Largely there are two different sides to this issue: the handling of the crisis and how the information is presented to the public. From product recalls to Covid-19, crisis response teams have been combining business practices, communication theories, and rhetorical analysis to deliver a crisis response message to the public. In this course, we will focus on the latter—rhetorical analysis. While we will discuss business and communication practices, this class will focus our studies on rhetoric, audience awareness, and genre studies of crisis communication. Our goal is to broaden our understanding of how to respond to a crisis across different mediums, to different audiences, and for different outcomes.
