Baccalaureate Degree Graduation Requirements

Candidates for the bachelor’s degree must meet all the following requirements for graduation:

  • Complete the course of study for the degree program as set forth in the Catalog with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. The baccalaureate degree requires the completion of a minimum of 120 hours, which includes:
    • General Education Core requirements of forty-one to forty-four (41-44) semester hours;
    • The B.A. degree requires six hours (6) foreign language (Intermediate Level) Or two from: ENG 315 Advanced Grammar (3), ENG 330 Second Language Acquisition (3), or ENG 411 Linguistics (3).
    • The B.S. degree requires MIS 110, MIS 220, CS 110, or EDU 410.
  • a minimum of forty-two (42) semester hours earned in courses numbered 300 or above;
  • a minimum of thirty (30) semester hours for a major;
  • a minimum of fifty-five (55) hours from a senior institution.
  • A minor, while not required for graduation, usually requires a minimum of eighteen (18) semester hours.
  • The last thirty (30) hours must be earned at the University of Tennessee Southern.
  • At least twelve semester hours at the upper-division level in the major field must be earned at UT Southern.
  • In compliance with the state law, one unit of American history at the high school level or 6 credits of collegiate work
    American History Requirement
    By act of the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee, students who have not had one year of American history in high school must complete six credit hours of American history if they receive an undergraduate degree after July 1, 1978. Three credit hours of this requirement may be satisfied by a university course in Tennessee history.

    Credit hours completed at the university level to fulfill high school deficiencies may be used to meet specific curriculum requirements and count toward the total credit hours required for graduation.
  • Completion of senior exit exam(s), which may include examinations in general education, the major field of study, or both.
  • A graduation fee.
